Question: Explore the ways the theme of thwarted dreams and aspirations is developed in of mice and men
Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is novel centring on the efforts of the main protagonists George and Lenny to achieve the American dream, to be your own man. The idea of being completely independent is a very important thing to many of the characters in the novel.
This dream is portrayed by Steinbeck as unattainable throughout the book, with one of the characters Crooks stating that he had “…seen hundreds of men come by on the road and on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads”. At this time Lenny had just revealed to Crooks his plan to get land with George and Candy. Crooks, as well as other characters throughout the novel state that everyone has this same dream in their head and that no one ever achieves it in the end. This use of repetition by Steinbeck is an extremely effective way of making the dream seem impossible and reinforcing the theme of thwarted dreams as it repeats over and over again that the American dream wanted by so many is obtained by so few. This repetition works by making the goal of getting their own land seem almost like a story or a far off fantasy than an attainable goal. By making their dreams almost a work of fiction it discredits it and forces the reader to see it as futile.
Steinbeck’s use of foreshadowing in the novel is yet another way that the author illustrates the theme of thwarted dreams to the reader. Foreshadowing is used right from the outset in the first couple pages of the book. When George is talking to Lenny about what Lenny should do when they arrive at the ranch in Soledad George states that Lenny “…ain’t gonna don no bad things like in weed.” This immediately implies that Lenny has done bad things in the past, and is likely to do bad things throughout the course of the book. This inevitability of failure is repeated throughout the book when George becomes increasingly worried about Lenny ruining their chances of making their dream. This is shown after Lenny broke Curley’s hand. George’s first reaction before checking if Lenny is all right is to ensure that they will still get their money “Slim, will we get canned now? We need the stake. Will Curley’s old man can us now?” This shows that this dream has gone too far and warped George’s priorities. Steinbeck immediately makes the book an exercise in futility by making the prospect of failure in their dream inevitable from the very beginning.
Another way in which Steinbeck explore his theme of thwarted dreams is the way that the protagonists’ dreams become more and more wild and their belief becoming even stronger. Throughout the book George’s advice to keep quiet and his immediate guarded response to Candy’s enquiries about the ranch that George and Lenny were talking about purchasing breaks down and he gets lost in the hope of finally achieving their dream. Throughout the book the dream takes on a gravitational aspect, attracting two of the most downtrodden people on the ranch, Candy and Crooks. Both of these men also show an interest, willing to buy in he dreams of George and Lenny. Their fantasies become more palpable throughout the book and as people join in on their dream. In the beginning of the book the dream is a modest one; to have their own land, a few crops and a couple rabbits for them to earn their own keep. When candy signs on to this dream they speak a lot more freely about their dreams to the other characters, for instance Candy tells Crooks that “We’re gonna have a dog an’ rabbits an’ chickens. We’re gonna have green corn an’ maybe a cow or a goat.” This shows that they genuinely believe that they’re gonna do it a lot more than the used to. The fact that these people are all interested shows that this is a universal dream in the book, a dream that never is shown by Steinbeck to have come true. Another thing to note is that only the two people who are most demoralised buy into this dream, the rest treating as a beggars dream that has no chance of coming true and that the men are fools for believing that this dream could ever amount to anything other than outright failure.
Steinbeck reinforces this idea that this dream is more of a fools wish than a genuine goal with a hope of achievement in the final pages of the book. Just moments before Lenny is shot and killed by George, Lenny asks to be told about their dream and George agrees to this partially as a service to Lenny and partially to get Lenny in a position for George to shoot him without Lenny realising what is happening. Just before George pulls the trigger Lenny says to George that they should “… do it now, Le’s get that place now”. This is Steinbeck’s way of imposing that in the end every other time that they said they were going to do it was just as futile as it is now with a gun to Lenny’s head. This is a powerful and effective way of Steinbeck influencing the readers’ thoughts to focus on the futility and the fact that all of the main characters dreams have been broken and had in the end always been a blind hope never to come to fruition. The fact that the characters hold on to their ambitions despite them being ridiculously unlikely and in cases impossible to actually work out is very showing of Steinbeck’s main theme that the dreams of the people in America in this time period were just as futile as in the book and that even outside of Steinbeck’s fiction the effects of broken dreams were being felt.
Curley’s wife is one of Steinbeck’s key tools in emphasise his theme of thwarted dreams. At two points in the book she tells the characters that she could have made something of herself, saying that “… a guy tol’ me he could put me in pitchers…” She also says to Lenny that she would have liked to run away with a show but was stopped by her mother on account that she was only fifteen. All of these dreams that Curley’s wife has had, but none of them had ever come true for her, the constant repetition of the fact that she could have made something of herself is employed by Steinbeck to create an even wider view on this theme of thwarted dreams that could never come true. Curley’s wife is also being constantly oppressed by other sources other than just the general oppression of the society she lives in. Curley himself is one of the main causes of this as he is the one who prevents her from being free to follow her dreams and prevents her from even experiencing happiness as he forces her to stay at home and to not talk to the other people on the ranch. This oppression is also extended onto Crooks as he shares similar dreams as the rest of the characters, but his dreams are almost even more futile than the rest because of the oppression that he experiences from society at large. Crooks is treat exactly as a black man would have been at this time, not allowed to sleep with the white man and constantly insulted whether directly or indirectly by the characters for his skin colour. This prejudice is what dissuades him from the idea of getting land with George and Lenny after originally being excited at the prospect of being treat as an equal. It is also interesting Steinbeck chose Curley’s wife to be the one to deliver this prejudice considering she is one of the ones prejudiced against.
Yet another way that Steinbeck embodies the key theme of thwarted dreams is the very last line of the book that is delivers immediately after Lenny has been killed. George and Slim are walking away to go get a drink, both being upset at Lenny’s death. Carlton after seeing them trudge away says “Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin’ them to guys?” This indifference to death of Lenny by Carlton is Steinbeck’s way of imitating the idea of society that emotional attachments are worthless and that any emotional tie is not important, the fact that Carlton is apathetic about this shows that his dreams were thwarted long ago, or maybe that he had no dreams to begin with. All of the workers on the farm have no real emotional attachments to any one, there is no kids, wives or family because these things are deemed as worthless in living the expected way for these men. The only emotional attachment that should be present is Curley’s with his wife. However it is shown that their relationship is loveless and void of emotion. This effect of isolation is used to show that all of the characters dreams have been torn apart and thrown away because they are useless to their lives.
Steinbeck’s use of language devices such as repetition and foreshadowing and his use of plot structure to emphasise the main theme of thwarted dreams on to the reader is extremely effective in concisely enthusing Steinbeck’s ideas about the society that he lived in that had led to so many broken dreams, and questioning the prejudices that had led to too many people’s dreams being denied.

In act 4 scene 1 the scene is set in Titus’s courtyard. Lavinia is chasing around young lucius who is carrying a pile of books. She is chasing him around, attempting to get a hold of one of the books. Titus stops young Lucius and allows her to find the book she needs. She picks out a book about a young women being raped in a forest. Marcus devises a way of writing in the sand of the courtyard with a pole without using his hands. Lavinia writes out the names of Demetrius and Chiron and Titus tells young Lucius and Marcus to keep quite about the identity of the rapists
Chiron and Demetrius are fighting in the forest near the palace. They are both interested in Lavinia and want he for themselves. Aaron the moor finds them and breaks them up so that they will not get into trouble, after a short discussion about Lavinia Aaron suggests to Chiron and Demetrius that they should rape Lavinia in one of the secluded areas of the forest. The brothers think this is a good idea and the two of the. Go of into the forest.
In the first scene of the play two brothers, saturninus and bassianus are vying for the position of emperor of Rome. Marcus enters to announce the return of titus Andronicus from a war with the goths. Titus enters followed by his sons carrying the coffin of their brother and they are followed by their prisoners the goths. Tamara and her three sons alarbus ,Chiron and Demetrius are brought forward to the Romans. Alarbus is killed as a sacrifice despite Tamara’s pleas for titus to be merciful. Titus then is voted to be emperor however he turns down the role and gives it to saturninus. Saturninus is set to marry Lavinia but decides instead to marry the queen of the goths Tamara. Lavinia then marries bassianus who she had ran away with. Titus’s sons protects her as she escapes and titus kills the one guarding the exit, mortius, and disowns him. Titus is then convinced by Lucius and Marcus to bury mortius in the family grave
Play wrights were restricted by the queens men censorship. They stopped playwrights from writing about any subject that even mentioned rebellion or Catholicism. Especially punished was regicide, Many playwrights were killed for past works they had written which involved killing the king or queen.
Shakespeare was almost jailed when he named one of his characters after sir john oldcastle in his play Henry the 4th part one. He made sir oldcastle appear to be a drunk and a braggart. In real life he was a rebel against king Henry the 5th. He was executed and the new Protestant rule made him into a martyr. How they displayed violence on stage
The Elizabethans had many different ways of mimicking violence on stage. One way was to have the actor on a turntable, when the “attacker” moves towards the victim the audience cannot see the victim. The turntable is then used to replace the actor with a dummy covered in animal blood. They also use parts of animal organs such as intestines and brains to demonstrate the violence. Animal bones could be broken to make the desired sound and animal bladders filled with blood and concealed under a actors clothes could be split with the point of a dagger or sword to make it appear as of the actor has been stabbed.

Mark allaway’s theme study written report
Subject: the soul
The theme study i am studying will be on the human soul. I choose this theme study because I thought it has always been a interesting philosophical discussion. People discuss this because it is an interesting discussion to explore as the soul can be perceived as either a physical or metaphysical object. Metaphysical objects are interesting because they are not actual things, they are just ideas.
For example one of the great philosophers in our history Democritus said happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold, happiness dwells in the soul. This likens the soul to the metaphysical ideas of happiness.
My first book is the serpents shadow by rick riordan this book is a novel that follows two magicians of the house of life; the ancient Egyptian magicians, as they try to stop the embodiment of chaos apophis. When I read this book it was originally just because I enjoyed the book but as I read through it I began noticing a lot of references to the soul. I found the Egyptian ideas about the soul interesting because they are a lot different compared to ideas that any of the countries we live in now have.
The soul is split into five parts according to the ancient Egyptians, the first part being the ib or the heart. This is the part of the soul that controls your emotion, desires and impulses. This was interesting as I discovered this is the reason we associate the heart with these things, because of the beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. When an Egyptian dies their ib is weighed to see if they have done enough good deeds to deserve the afterlife. This also the reason we say the phrase to have a heavy heart when you’re guilty or upset.
The sheut or the shadow is everything that makes you you. It is the embodiment of your appearance and personality. This one was interesting to me because I found out that the Egyptians word for shadow,statue,portrait and appearance are exactly the same, sheut.

My next was a book that I choose or rather the librarian chose for me, was flip. This book was originally to me a bit of a waste of time as it didn’t really seem to have anything to do with the soul, but as I read further into the book it became apparent that in fact the entire plot was based around the idea that the soul is the embodiment of your animal instincts, your ability to survive.

Vaudevue struggled towards the lakes edge, every step even more drawn out and painful as the last. Her tattered olive fatigues hung off her malnourished frame, every remnant of fat and muscle taken by M.L.5. But the hunger was not the reason she could not walk a single pace without pain reverberating through her entire being, the gas was responsible for that.
It had started like any normal day at the camp, early wake up, pitiful breakfast and a droning interrogation that gained nothing for either side. The wardens had seemed unusually upbeat in hindsight; there were far too few beatings for it to have been a “normal” day. There was talk of a high ranking officer arriving at the camp, not that any of the POWs or Vaudevue cared, but the wardens and the commandant were eying their next promotions and would not let a few dirty inmates ruin that for them. For that reason the wardens ushered them to the dank shower blocks, which despite being a prisoner for 3 months, Vaudevue had never been allowed to use. Caked in mud from months of hard labour and sweat from the roasting summer sun had made her crave for a good shower almost as much as a hot meal; it finally looked like she was going to get it.
Finally it was her turn, the pug nosed guards shoved her through the wide doorway, her weakened body could not keep its balance on the slippery tiles. The crack of her nose breaking against the floor echoed through the small building. Pain stabbed at her face, as blood splattered the floor around her. The guards wrapped their arms around her, yanking her up ungraciously to her feet, Vaudevue bit her lip so as to not cry out and give the guards their satisfaction. “Have nice fall, pretty lady?” Mocked the guard in the broken English all the guards seem to speak in this wretched place. His grossly muscled arms propelled her forward into the shower block, she expected to slide on the damp floor however the floor was strangely dry, too dry for a room where the rest of the camp had showered only a couple minutes prior. This should have been Vaudevue’s warning, but naïve as a child without memory she stripped out of her clothing, placed them on a bench in the corner of the room and then positioned her body under one of the twenty nozzles in the chamber. The call for the doors to be closed rang out and the guards left the room. A few things suddenly struck Vaudevue, she and all of the other prisoners had not been given soap to wash themselves with, which was odd considering the entire point was to make the prisoners of war “presentable” for this high ranking officer.. Probably most telling of all however was the door; she had never understood why a shower would need a reinforced steel air tight door until now. Almost as if spurred on by her suspicions, the hissing began. Slowly and steadily at first, but gradually it became louder and higher pitched, Vaudevue’s fear was almost tangible now as she threw herself at the door. Confusedly the other inmates looked on, perhaps they just though faulty piping was the reason for the venomous hissing that filled the room, but Vaudevue knew better. She grasped desperately at the door, holding her breath as best she could; it was too late for the others however. They were doubled over clutching at their throats, drowning in the deadly invisible sea surrounding them. Tears blurred Vaudevue’s vision; she could not hold her breath any longer. She felt the thickened air roll down her throat like boiling water, searing her wind pipe and making her choke and splutter. That was when something unexpected happened; the door was yanked upon by the guard who had shoved her earlier, dressed in a bio hazard suit and gas mask. He doubled back in shock, no doubt he had thought by now everyone would be thoroughly incapacitated. Vaudevue seized her opportunity, shoving past the guard she sprinted out of the shower blocks as fast as her skinny legs would take her, as the guard hit the floor mask first Vaudevue heard the satisfying crack where the mask broke, forcing the guard to breathe in the terrors he had unleashed.
Vaudevue did not know how far the lake was from the camp, not far she knew, the guards would already be mounting a search party by now. She now sat on a flat stone on the lake side, every breath more painful than the last. Knowing now what she must do, to finally end her suffering; caused by the gas or otherwise. She stripped down until she was completely naked and plunged in to the water, its icy embrace comforting her in her last moments.
