Steinbeck constantly repeats the fact that Lenny must return to the brush if he gets in trouble.
Curley’s wife isn’t named at the start, her name is not used by anyone. This shows that women are treated as objects.
Curlews wife is portrayed as promiscuous, this shows the view of women at
that time.
Slim is portrayed as a kind of god of the ranch, it is obvious that Steinbeck wants to show slim in a good light
Steinbeck keeps setting up the ending.
Candy’s dog could be used as a metaphor for Lenny and candy, there all theoretically useless and Lenny is killed in the same way as the dog
George treats Lenny and candy as if they were children
Steinbeck constantly talks about how lonely the people on the ranch are, first crooks and then curlews wife

George repeats the way that he uses his money at the end of the money, this is possibly a euphemism for all the other men at the time
At the end of the book Lenny is going insane, it is possible he’s been like this throughout the book
Lennies movements are often likened to animals, “lennie dabbled his big paw in the water”
