This looks like a very good plan.

Some advice to make sure you reach the sophistication you’re capable of here is:

Think of your essay as a ‘developing argument’ – which means that each paragraph builds on the prior one (rather than simply repeating the same analysis in a different domain). This might mean you’ll look at each of the characters you’ve selected according to how they continuously strengthen the effect of isolation – each more than the former.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to examine Steinbeck’s use of language – you might want to interrogate the quotations you use, each time identifying the metaphors or symbolism or word choice or sentence structure that Steinbeck uses to create this effect of isolation (even words can feel ‘sparse’) – or alternatively you might want to select quotations specifically because they exemplify the idea of isolation and explain those in their own paragraph.

In your mind, have a clear answer to the question: that is: “Mark, what effect DOES isolation have on these characters?” and “Mark, what tricks does Steinbeck use to support or strengthen the appearance of these effects?”

Keeping the question clear in your mind will ensure everything you write is directed to answering those questions (which is always better than just answering according to a plan)

Let me know if you need any further assistance
